Plan to hit the beach 2 days before the long weekend paid dividend for us. Breeze and swell was just as it said in the web. Light southerlies and because there was bugger all tides and with a lot of the beach gone, conditions was quite treacherous. As sun got higher, you could clearly pick the gutters and holes. The challenge was to make sure that you time your cast in between the waves to pinpoint clean water and made sure your rig did not get washed on to the reef.

I’m a new moon night brigade fisho. Like CCR, I don’t like it “when bad moon’s on the rise”. It’s probably a self fulfilling thing. Until now I’ve never caught a decent fish in day light let alone on full moon. First Mulla came at the turn of the tide at 9.30am and then quiet. Unanimous decision was to shift further up the beach so we could stake a decent spot before dark. Not that we needed to because we had beach all to ourselves. The second fish came in at the top of the tide at around 11.30am and at 18kg this has become our new record.

Same thing following day; a 12 kg fish at turn of the tide and then my 13.5 kg trophy caught at around midday. Very unlucky fish this one. It managed to catch main line on the reef but fortunately for the fisho the 30lb mono held and miraculously the snag came undone and within less than 10 minutes fish was on the beach.

As long weekend fishos started to stream in, we opted for at the gorge. Water looked unusually green (cold?) for this time of the year. Bad moon meant ol’ man Snapper was not at home. Not so for Mulloway. Nice to be proven wrong every once in a while.

Great fishing Rubin - well done.

What did you get them on? And any hints as to the location, Kalbarri way?(not exactly just a rough idea)

Good to see.

Great captures.

Very gentlemen's hours indeed.

No chance of that down here with beaches packed full of bathers, jet skis, surfers etc

And here's my mate's 18kg Trophy.

Location is definitely not Yalata. Next time perhaps. For now Central west between Horrock and Kalbarri would do.

Rubin

Looks like the beach between Hutt River and Nobbies Hole. Either that or Wagoe.

Nice fish

Looks very Wagoish to me. But seen plenty of bigger specimens come from Hutt River mouth and Lucky Bay.

Nice rewards for you blokes there Rubin I used to write mornings off for Mulloway fishing but not any more, and your details prove it. But I must say 11.30am Geez even I would have given up fishing good water by that hour

Well done

Yeah its funny how we get stuck in fishing patterns. I used to be the same, after dark or the crack of dawn, back for brekkie by 8.00.

My biggest Mulla (18+ kg) hit a Tailor fillet in the middle of the afternoon, after we had written the the day off.

That's what i love about fishing, you just never know.

One of the best days I have had on mullas was when we had the last lot of day light saving.2.30 ( sun time 1.30) in the arvo on the west coast. 4 casts 4 fish ( bag limit back then was 4 or they might not even of had a limit) It's never happened since. Yes, they all went to good homes.

Cheers Rev.

Thanks fellas. Here's our previous Group benchmark caught last year. Didn't have a scale then, I'm guessing its weight was about there.

Its hard watching your mates catch all the fish. I was beginning to think what I was doing wrong? So I'm really stoked with this fish. Restored my confidence that if you concentrate on getting "into the zone" with gear, bait and all, its just a matter of time. Just to put it in perspective, last good fish I caught was 23 years ago. Don't expect to land too many of these in a life time of fishing. I hope I don't have to wait that long though.
