Plan to hit the beach 2 days before the long weekend paid dividend for us. Breeze and swell was just as it said in the web. Light southerlies and because there was bugger all tides and with a lot of the beach gone, conditions was quite treacherous. As sun got higher, you could clearly pick the gutters and holes. The challenge was to make sure that you time your cast in between the waves to pinpoint clean water and made sure your rig did not get washed on to the reef. I’m a new moon night brigade fisho. Like CCR, I don’t like it “when bad moon’s on the rise”. It’s probably a self fulfilling thing. Until now I’ve never caught a decent fish in day light let alone on full moon. First Mulla came at the turn of the tide at 9.30am and then quiet. Unanimous decision was to shift further up the beach so we could stake a decent spot before dark. Not that we needed to because we had beach all to ourselves. The second fish came in at the top of the tide at around 11.30am and at 18kg this has become our new record. Same thing following day; a 12 kg fish at turn of the tide and then my 13.5 kg trophy caught at around midday. Very unlucky fish this one. It managed to catch main line on the reef but fortunately for the fisho the 30lb mono held and miraculously the snag came undone and within less than 10 minutes fish was on the beach. As long weekend fishos started to stream in, we opted for at the gorge. Water looked unusually green (cold?) for this time of the year. Bad moon meant ol’ man Snapper was not at home. Not so for Mulloway. Nice to be proven wrong every once in a while. (Click Image for full size)
