Hi fellas, probably asking the impossible here but I was looking at getting a setup to use from the beach and also from the rocks.   Will be fishing around Esperance, Cape Le Grande area.   I appreciate that it would be better to have gear specifically for beach and rock fishing but the budget wont stretch to that.   I was thinking something around the 10ft mark in carbon composite 6-10kg matched with the likes of a  Penn Spinfisher or Slammer.   Any advice on rod/reel would be much appreciated.
Cheers John.

G'day John,
Your best bet would be a FSU5120 Snyder of Pacific -  this rod proberly favours rock fishing a little but is more than capable of throwing 5 - 6 oz and fillet baits leads for close in beach gutters but will come into it's own off the rocks - the fast taper let's the rods top half "fold away" thus not over powering you to much like a slower tapered 12-13 foot rod.
It's proberly going to have to be a custom build so a low mount is the way to go - matched to a largish threadline with 15kg line you should be fine.
I have a FSU8120 matched to a Alvey that is a high rock/cliff setup mainly(bit slow and heavy) -  but the 5120 is on the cards for me ASAP - A friend Peter Smith has a custom that his brother Mark ordered when getting his and it's a very nice build - heatshrink foregrip add's a nice touch by keeping the diameter down as well, Peter has since ordered the same rod but for a overhead.

Hi John, Reel choices look fine and you could look at a 3.3m Salmon Lite  graphite stick from the Ozflex stable as a good medium all rounder or a heavier Ozflex Western Surf SU 400G for chucking big baits and metal lures.

I reckon a starlo stix 6-10 kg and a penn 6810 are both too light for the rocks, and can really only chuck 2-3oz sinkers and a bait. I know cause I have owned both rods and tried sinker fishing with them. Their forte is throwing lightly weighted or unweigted baits and lure throwing.

An FSU 5120 is a superb cliff/rock rod and will  more than holds it's own on the beach if you need to throw 6oz sinkers plus a fillet bait or mulie.

You could look at graphite, but if the rod needs to lift fish vertically, graphite doesn't like to bend over 90 degrees but the 5120 will almost bend itself in a knot before it will break. As Chris says, this shortens the leverage against you when lifting from above which is a huge advantage IMO.

If you want to keep away from graphite on the rocks, I use a Pacific Composit SU 400G. It is a good rod for the rocks and can keep pace with the best of them on the beach. As far as a Pen 6810, I find they handle 5 oz's beautifully, and are hopeless trying to bait cast with them, my old Snyderglass leaves it for dead bait casting or tossing around light lure like the SJ.

Cheers   Rev.

In the past i have used a Shimano BeastMaster 10foot rod, very nice rod for the price *around the $100* but suddenly the tip broke casting out a 3once sinker and have since heard a few reports of similar happenings.. it has a very lite tip which makes it great for casting and does have alot of power when needed...

I now use a 10foot Daiwa Firewolf, its a little more robust than the Beastmaster. It handled a 23kg Yellow Tail Kingi last year paired up with a Okuma Eb80 fishing 15kg. Painful 20min fight with braid and wouldnt do it again. 9foot is the max needed for rockfishing, especially when trying to put the hurt on a decent fish.

As for beach fishing, the 10footer can normally get past the first line of breakers where alot of your salmon/tailor would be feeding.. but its on the small side for long distance casting to target snapper and other bottom feeders.

Sure there are better on the market but both those rods have cost me less than $100 each and i believe are good for that price.
