Gday, I'm off to work around 300k south of port headland till christmas, I'm gonna stash my trusty 10' spinfisher and some lures in my luggage. Can any-one give me any idea at all where I could cast a line, beach or rock? would love to spin up something large, or throw some poppers around, even plastics. I've heard the tides are a nightmare. I reckon I could sneak off to the coast a couple of times before I fly home - should I just try a charter from port headland, or are there some good ledges?

Any help would be awesome.
Cheers Ian

Gday Ian,  I was in Port Hedland last week. Try fishing the rocks next to the town boat ramp at low tide, good chance of a big trev or queenie there. Spoilbank sandbar is good on incoming tide for all sorts of fish. Try also the local creeks, 6 mile and redbank, as barra are around too, with plenty of mudcrabs to be had inbetween casts.
Not so many ledges to be had, just get a tide chart as certain spots can only be fished on a high or low tide.

Welcome Ian

If you're based 300 km south of Hedland this will open up the coast from Exmouth to Pt Hedland as options - including major centres of Exmouth, Onslow, Dampier/Karratha, Samson and a heap of places in between.  Most run charters and also offer good shore based fishing opportunities.

Hey fellas I'm in the west at west angelas, 350k south of port hedland. Looks like karratha is too far to travel, any ideas about where to go - I've heard that the barra are on in the creek mouths, and mackeral are being caught off the port ahedland jetty. I'm probably gonna go to hedland, but if there are any good spots off the beaten track and not too far from the great northern highway junction, I'd be keen to get some info. Won't have time to go searching, will arrive in the dark and be leaving to come back to the mine at lunchtime next day. GT's the preferred target. Love some help,
thanks, Ian

Gday Ian

Your keen I'll give you that, the travel time from mine to NW highway is about 3hrs and the closest spot there that I can think of is munda (mundaboolingana) (sp) station. turn south at the turn off and head about 10 to 30ks down the road (cant remember) station has a big white framed entrace, its about 40ks in to the beach

first things first is ring the station ahead of time and make sure you can still get access, as there was some trouble with locals shooting cattle and trashing the place.

queenfish, salmon, trevally macky can all be had, king tides provide a platform to cast lures off at high tide, fish the neaps on the beach and around at cowrie creek, great fishing offshore as well.

ring before you set off though just to make sure.

if you had more time I would suggest cape kruden (sp) or Pardoo a few hours north, great spot to cast lures macky trev , Ive seen tripple tail and big reef fish landed where the rabbit proof fence enters the sea

port headland tides should set you right , and check your wind, eastlies should suit you fine no protection in a westerly or northerly sea breeze , and about this time of year they start to pick up about midday and blow untill dark.

Ian,
Look for a place called Cleaverville, I think about 130-150 Clicks North of Karratha. Chance of Barra in the Estuary and anything Sharks, Mackerel, Queenies from the rocks. The worlds biggest oysters on the rocks at low tide. Gods Country.
