Hi guys,

I'm back for some more advice.

I've decided to make up a Calstar GF760L for Sambo jigging and was looking for any advice as best guides, guide spacings, winch fittings etc.

The rod will be used with a spinning reel filled with 80lb braid.

Also I've heard that the GF7460L might be a better blank to use. Any opinions on this?

Hi Andy,just bought myself a calstar GF 760 L blank myself to be made up with the Fuji ion coated sic's apparently this blank and guide's set up,is one of the best for jigging ,Al Bevan also has one and Hal and Che will also be able to fill you in on the virtue's of this setup....cheers Geoff

After doing a bit of research & getting some advice on this forum I went for a live fibre graphite blank GBB60XJ (24Kg).
A bit lighter rod with a fairly slow taper to absorb some of the shock.
I am going to pick up the finished product in a couple of weeks - will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for that.

Was cost your main deciding factor? Or do you think that the the Live Fibre is a better blank?

I checked out their website, but couldn't find any realy good info. They do say that the Live Fibre range has a fast action though. Most of the research that I've done so far would indicate that a more parabolic action is favoured for jigging. That said I've not seen the blank and am only going by their general description of the live fibre range.

Hi Andy,
i know i have had my two cents worth on this subject a couple of times, and i have backed the GBB60XJ and GBB60MJ blanks every time. Not exactly a penny-pinching option though- the GBB60MJ cost around $180. I have built the light version for a mate and what a great rod it is..... the GBB60XJ would make a good samson killer. The calstar has more outright lift, but they have relatively light tips and dont move jigs throught the water as easily. The Kilwells load right at the foregrip, and ease the strain on the back- plus the weight factor.
The Kilwell website is pretty poor, and dont expect to get much info from there. Both these Kilwells are moderate/slow in action and full graphite, ie; are nothing like any other "live fibre" model.

Thanks very much for that info. I'm still waiting to hear back from Hal and maybe Che who I know are both Calstar fans, but am keen to hear everyones point of view before I go ahead and buy.

Do you know who sells the Kilwell range of blanks?

Hi Andy
Hal just sold me a Calstar GF765XL, because I wanted something with a bit more give and a more moderate action than a 760L...it is also a tiny bit longer at 6'6". Might pay to compare the two. It is still fairly fast in action, but I tried it alongside a 760L, and the 760L seemed quite hard and faster by comparison.
I like them to bend right back to the butt, too! Both of these are quite strong blanks, and it depends on how much of your back that you want to put into it.
I am still looking for other variations, and have seen some softer, but longer, fibreglass blanks that are used on the SA west coast, that have a nice bend in them under load. I think that most graphite blanks are harsh on the fisherman, although they are light. For that silky and bendy action there is nothing wrong with "E" or "S" glass...like Sabre/Seeker, etc.
Those Killwells sound interesting, too.

Have a good look at the GF760L Andy, for jigging its a real weapon. Like Doug said though, to get a good feel you really need to play with them side by side.

Build a GF760M and let us know how it feels will ya

Last time out i had a shot at Che's 760L, VERY nice!

That seems to have a very nice bend in it right through to the butt.

What size did the fish go?

Do you reckon that the M is better option for Sambo Jigging than the L?

Do you know what Allan Bevan of Shikari uses and recomends? There's one guy that probably gets to see more rods used for Sambo Jigging than anyone.

Dunno Andy, the 80lb braid parted company. Which reminds me...i owe Che a jig for that one.

The 760L is rated 30-80lb while the 760M is 40-100lb. As to which is better, i wouldnt know mate. The M sounds like a ripper but i'm not sure if you could go hard with it all day long....it would slay the fish but it may knock the crappers out of ya while doing it. It takes a fair effort to keep a serious bend in the L anyway.

I know Che was talking about getting an M built.....not sure if he's done it yet though.

hi andy,al uses a few different rods but the calstar (dunno what numbers)
is one of em.if money was no object he'd recomend a fisherman monster.
i use whatever is closest at the time,but as ive said on here before,my cut down ugly gutsbut has done over more big fish than i can count.its not exactly glamorous,but it works.
a.b gets back from karratha tomorra,so no doubt he'll put in his 2 bobs worth.

Those Van Staals would have to be the ugliest damn reel ever built. Can't believe people pay what they ask when you could have Saltiga etc for way less.
