G'day fellas,

Planning a two night trip to the beach around the Moore River mouth in the next couple of weeks. Haven't fished this area before, usually go to Wedge or Hill River. Targets will obviously be tailor and mulla's. Really just chasing some info on vehicle beach access and likely places to start looking. I'm guessing the onshore reef to the north would be as good a place to start as any.

Cheers

I have been down thier a fair bit lately, I found some ok size bream the old man got an absolute Beauty though.

I spoke to a couple of guys who had thier surf rods on thier tents and 1 guy caught a decent mulloway, from the sounds of things it was right on the main beach by the mouth of the river.

On the way out the kids were asking if I caught any and they said thier dad caught 2 tailor, not sure bout the sizes though mate. Good luck..

Hi Tyron,
I haven't fished guilderton for a bit over a year I guess but I do like to get up there when there is bugger all weed around. Danny W is probably the man who can provide some good info on the area and I am sure he'll drop a line here if he notices this post. I think he has some good spots right near the mouth either side. I normally fish what I think they call "3-mile reef". This is a bit less than 3 miles north of town. You can get here by heading through town and down to the rock groyne car park. Beach access is via the car park and you head north (sorry don't have the exact kms but can probably get the gps co-ords if you like) for maybe 2-3kms to a rock/reef ledge on the edge of the beach. The access is normally fine but can be hairy and I find it better to stay down near the waterline if the beach is steep with drop-offs on the track edge. There is atleast one spot that you drive extremely close to some limestone rock at roof height and you really need to go slow and carefully here. You'll need to know the tide times and high tide isn't the best time for beach access there. With tyres at 16psi you should be fine, but go lower if needed. You can also access this area via a track behind the dunes near the lighthouse if needed, but exiting the beach this way can be very difficult. When at the reef, depenednt on swell, wind and weed I like to fish off of the reef or to the north for the better fishing, otherwise get as close as you can on the south side. Normally good here for tailor, herring, small sharks and they do get good mulloway (as long as your not fishing with me). I might head up there on Saturday arvo if SHMBO lets me off the chain. Look for a white 100 series wagon with a shovel on the roof rack. Good luck.

Thanks Rob, great info.

I'll be interested to here the weed situation if you get up there. I'm looking at going on th 17th.
Will be targeting tailor to use as bait for mulla's with some luck!

I also haven't been there for a few months, and it was very quiet when I did go but the Tailor should be on the bite there by now. Its always hit and miss with the weed situation up there, but usually you can find a gap somewhere. The last time the beach was very soft, but I cruised through at around 12lbs tire pressure and that's what I would reccomend as a starting point. I past a couple of spots where other 4x4s had been bogged, pretty bad judging by the huge holes and sand piled up from digging. Some sections of beach were washed away quite a bit, and I had one section give way on me. If I hadn't reacted real quick and turned down the slope I could've gotten into a bit of bother. Either side of the rivermouth is definitely worth a shot. Usually quite a few whiting and herring around if nothing else. Good for live bait if you can't get a tailor but I reckon you will.
Good luck when you do go. Must be nearly time I got up there again to.
Danny.

Cheers Dan,

Thanks for the insights and info.

Now just gotta decide between Moore River, or a trip down Pemby way, now I have the taste for trout fishing well and truly back.

Yeah me and a mate got up there weekend of 18/19 October.
Hadn't done a report yet cos I'm waiting to get my camera back, should have it this weekend.
Anyway we drove north along the beach from Guilderton, up to and past the three mile on the friday arvo.
Bloody weed everywhere. Having not been there before, we were a bit disconcerted about what to do next. Ended up taking a punt and finding our way onto the beach south of the river mouth, or really halfway between Two Rocks and Guilderton. Still a fair bit of weed. Camped up for the night with plans to baitcast off the reef ledge at low tide/1st light in the morn. Woke with a shocking hangover, fell over at least half a dozen times trying to fish the ledge, but ended up pulling a dozen or so reasonable tailor on gardies, and two decent squid. All over by 7.30am. Packed up and trekked up to the Hill River, a place we were both very familiar with. Repeated the dose Sat night once the wind died down, with plenty of good tailor and a few herring. Sent out some fresh tailor fillets, only to fall asleep in me swag and miss the run! By the time I picked up the rod it was all over.
All in all was a worthwhile trip, the place between Two Rocks and Guilderton seems pretty popular, but we'll be back I reckon. Good looking water. Will post some pics over the weekend.
Cheers

Was a top weekend really.

Russell, I don't really know how we got in there. Followed Cadagan (?) Rd then turned right and followed a track along a fence line for a while, then turned right at a t junction and eventually hit the beach. I do know that we came out on the Wilbinga track or whatever its called as we returned to Wanneroo Rd at Wilbinga Cove.
