To all those that can remember ....it's Guy Fawkes Night......ahh what a night they were. Tom thumbs, penny bombs, sky rockets, cathryn wheels, jumping jacks and plenty I cant remember. I reckon it was the best night of the year, better than Xmas and Easter joined together. And a big bonfire with GF on the top in a pair of overalls. They were the Good Old Days.

Cheers   Rev.

And couldn't recall too many people blowing themselves up or causing life threatening injuries either.

Maybe we were just too drunk and happy to comprehend our actions.

Nor do I. The best part was joining 2 penny bombs together and putting them under a jam tin.

Cheers   Rev.

Few letter boxes went up also those penny bungers were like sticks of dynamite

Not life threatening but was fun to watch the kid running around because someone dropped a cracker into his large cracker bag he was holding

How about the sky rocket wars ........ aiming & firing the sky rockets off at your mates whilst we all hid in dug out trenches ...... be very careful when you stuck your head up

We used to live a stones throw from the fire works factory in Auckland. Every year they would have a masssive fire to burn off all the dud fireworks.
A lot of them would not actually go off, and thats when me and my brothers would move in and have a years supply of tom thumbs, double happies and a host of others.
Collecting gunpowder was one of my hobbies

Kids these days are missing out big time

I remember as a kid at Nannup about 1951, I spent several weeks cutting down blue gum saplings which had suckered, to dry off and I built a bonfire to be proud of, complete with a Guy at the top.  Chucked in lots of asbestos bits and pieces to make a bang.  That year I had the biggest box of assorted crackers I have ever had and waited with all the excitement of a 10 year old.  When it got dark, down we went to the bonfire and lit her up.  They used to put out a special match just for Guy Fawkes night called "Bronco Brand".  They had ahead that went at least half way down the match stick, which made it flare for several seconds.  I went to light my first penny bomb, the bomb was thown one way and the still flaring match was thrown the other - right into my box of crackers.  It was all over in seconds, very spectacular.  I cried!!!!

Cheers Baz

Cracker night , the hardest part was waiting for it to get dark.

This thread "sparked" a few memories of times gone by and sadly lost .

I do recall hearing the number eye injuries as a reason to finish it .

They still had it when I worked in NZ , big social event with huge bonfires in most towns ......... but that was some time ago.

Another reason to can DLS. ...you wouldn't light the bonfire until 10 o'clock.

Cheers    Rev.

We discovered a year or so ago that a TEDs bottle packed with sparkler dust makes a good column of fire... until it explodes a few seconds in! Didn't see that one coming, lucky no one was hurt, or has been since it spread glass all over my backyard!
The next one we thought a bit harder and burried it up to the top and it produced a good 3-4m of spout for about 10 seconds and all the glass can be scooped out in one go.

its till pretty damn big over here, as I type this its 4-30pm just turned, its almost Barak Obama out side and the fireworks have already started. They will continue until at least 11pm tonight.
This weekend coming will see fireworks all over again, should be dry too (its trying to rain right now) and they will continue until the early hours of Sunday morning.

They drive me mad to be honest .. I have one dog that hates them, she goes to pieces trying to hide. Trouble is they are on sale in every newspaper shop in the country, you only have to be 18 years or over to buy them. The kids have been letting them off for 3 weeks now, dont ask, I dont know how they are able to get them.

Having said they drive me mad, I am very excited about this Saturday. I have been asked to help a mate set up an organised display... £60,000 worth of explosives. It will take 6 hours apparently, to set the display up, electronic detonation, seems I wont be allowed to run round with a lighted match, gutted
The lad is coming to assist as well and will be putting his semi pro photography skills to good use hopefully.

Gonna make the ariel bombshells we bought as kids seem like penny squibs

Remember the catherine wheels that never span round

We still have Guy Fawkes night Steve although the PC brigade are slowly putting the brakes on.
This year, sales were restricted to 3 days before the event & had an R18 purchase restriction.
I think it's a lot of fun but didn't last night when the hoons down the road let off their surplus at 1-45am!!

Careful Rev most youngsters read GF as girlfriend these days.

Could turn ugly.
