I have had my new Stella in a box for about 9 months now and need to get a rod built. It is the new 20000SW and what I had in mind for it was some jigging and light game fishing. What I want to do is get a custom rod built but looking for some advice on what blanks. In the past I have been a fan of the live fibre rods and have a few of them. I love there soft action but they still have the grunt when needed. What are your thoughts to blanks and rod length. The light game stuff will be trolling for beakies mack's etc.

Tony

Gotta admire the self control at having some bling like that for 9 months, and not being tempted to use it!!!

I do like the T-Curve blanks used in the off the rack rods... and I know Hastings and some of the other Japanese blanks are well regarded - the nomad site has some comments I believe.

Good luck and make sure you post some pics of the first few beasties that come over the gunwhale!!

Cheers

Stanno

What line were you thinking of putting on it? The 20000 when mentioned with jigging, is usually 80lb or greater for sambo jigging, and I dont know if that counts as light gamefishing :p. Are you going custom built because you cant find what you're looking for in a prebuilt rod, or for other reasons? I can think of a few rods that are quite parabolic, but have the guts to really put some hurt on the fish (with less hurt on you).

Line doesn't really matter at this stage Matt. More then likely I will have to get a spare spool to use for different applications. More interested in the rods at this stage. I have looked at a few in the shops and yes I guess I like something alittle different with bindings and fittings. I have had a few rods built for me over the years and I think it is money well spent.

Yeah Chris it isn't by choice that it still in the box but I have big plans for it this summer so need to get it ready.

Has been awhile since I have bought a rod though and I am not upto date with whats out there. Thanks in advance

Hi Tony

This is a Stella 20000 getting a work out on beakies.

It was loaded with 80 lb braid a very thin expensive one that worked well.

The reel was very impressive the marlin went to the bottom 6 or 7 times, the depth at one stage was150 + metres and was on for 11/2 hours.

you wont be disappointed with it from what I saw.

Also a Ryobi Safari did very well loaded with 50 lb braid on a marlin.

Cheers

Ashley

Well, I meant more like what strength line you want. I doubt you'd get a rod that will work well with 30lb and 80lb+ for example. If you know the line you'll generally want to run it might open up or close a few blank options. Some blanks will handle 80lb but still bend a bit on 30lb though (a few jigging rods that do that, i.e. fold away quick but have a lot of butt strength). Though, some blanks wont bend much on either but will still work. If you plan on jigging, having a jig weight you'll want it to handle might be useful.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned calstar. They seem to pop up very quickly for blank recommendations. There are a few jigging blanks available that I know of though. Not sure what your budget is? (a few jigging rods have that action you were mentioning in the first post, i.e. soft action but with lots of grunt)

If you want a custom rod, then it might still be worth playing around with a few different finished rods just so you know exactly what you want your blank to do?

What about a Calstar?

I had Bluewater knock me up a Calstar 700H for my Saltiga Dogfight - it's more of a popper chucking outfit, but can double up as a jigging rig if need be. For the price, its a very versatile stick with a lot of grunt when needed.

There is a lot of great off the rack rods, but its hard to beat a custom build rod, tailor made to your liking.

If you have a reel that expensive, perhaps it deserves a couple of rods?

So far as I can tell, anything that's a good popper rod is going to be a lousy jigging rod and vice versa.

Thanks for that Matt I will check out the calstar's. I have seen a few rods on you tube that look similiar to what I'm looking for but can't see or hear the brand. Unfortunatly it was a little while ago when I seen them and haven't been able to find the same short vids.

Nice fish Ashley makes me feel a little home sick. Used to catch alot of them over at Port Stephens NSW. Not the sails though.

Have you got a photo of that rod you are using Glen. Maybe Jamie is right and I will need a couple of rods but Happy to spend the dollars on one rod if I can get a couple of uses out of it.

I will check out you tube and see if I can find what I had seen and post them up and see if anyone can spot them.

I havent used any calstars, so not sure how they'd go, but seems a lot of custom rod builders like them.

As for multiple uses: Remember, jack of all trades, king of none :p. Though, its not necessarily impossible with the right blank.

I'd be willing to say a rod that does a good job of everything is impossible, but some uses certainly are more complimentary than others;
1) jigging and trolling; both suit a parabolic action
2) jigging and popping; can't see a parabolic rod doing a good job of casting and a stiff tip isn't good for jigging
3) stickbait and popper; both suit casting fast action rods, but then you want a stiffer tip for poppers than stickbaits.

G'day Tony, haven't you used that Stella yet? Hope ya can give it a good workout this summer. Mate of mine is using a GUSA blank and he's very happy with it. You could have a talk to Honsu from Oceanside they seem to stock some good gear.

Cheers Olie.

Hey Jerome, hows things, I've just been on the water trying out the new 760HT Bar Crusher. Thanks for the advice. I think the best way is to get in there and try a few. Have a good idea of what I want just wanted top see what others are using. Hopefully I'll have it up and running soon, heaps keen to try it.

Calstar GF760L could well be what would tickle you. The rodbuilders at Bluewater Melville can show you that and more...
