I'm looking for a way to load my kayak on the Pajero which is quite tall. I found the following.

http://www.tropicalwatersports.com.au/shop/product_info.php?cPath=78&products_id=365&osCsid=7b76774d589384484d9e6a7015419fba

I'ts a mechanism that will easily load the yak onto a roof rack.
I have a Cobra Pro Fisherman and at 4.2m ~30kg is quite a task to get it on the racks.
I reckon the money spent on this will save my back and extend my yakking career. I wonder if anyone has seen something like this locally. At this stage it looks like I can only get one from over east.

Check out this link in the Australian Kayak Fishing Forum.

If you are handy you may be able to make one of those extension bars for your roofrack - a lot cheaper than the Thule one?

There are some great ideas there. I'm not much good with engineering but I reckon I can rig up something similar. I't won't be pretty.

Thanks Ry, saved me a few Dons.

I have a similar challenge getting my X13 onto my Delica Van - its not as heavy as your yak (~28kg), though the system I used helps to manage the unwieldyness of the yak.

I attach a piece (about 20cm long) of flexible pipe onto the end of the roof rack bar and then slide a long pole into this.  This pole then comes down to the ground at about a 30 deg angle.  I do this on both roof rack bars and can then 'push' the kayak up the poles and onto the bars. Still involves a bit of grunt in a clean and jerk style though is infinitely more controlled and easier than putting it on the 2.2m high roof unaided.

hope this helps. I use steel camping poles - system cost about $20 all up.  You can also use them to stick up a tarp for shade as well

Cheers

Matt

ps best approach is to buddy up and get someone to help though

I've built a roller mechanism with rubber tubing and attached them to the roof racks. Slides nicely on the roof of the old bus. It's a little easier and saves scratching the base of the yak on the racks. I then place the yak on the carriers. Still takes a bit of effort, but then I reckon if you can't manage this job then you probably should be giving it away anyway.
