Hi,
I am fishing 50lb braid for bottom bouncing and currently tying a snap-swivel direct to the braid via a bimini twist and a catspaw. The paternoster (made using 80lb Penn 10X) is then attached to the snap using a 150lb swivel.

Reading the experts comments I have decided to use a leader but I am not sure of the size. Should it be heavier or lighter than the braid and is the leader length critical. I'm using a GT knot so the leader will be wind on.

Your suggestions will be appreciated
Dave

You could just drop the snap swivel and lengthen the paternoster so it has more length between the swivel and your top set of hooks this becomes the leader.  I like to have a swivel in the system for bottom bouncing I think it helps presentation.

I also use 50 lb braid, always with a 3-4 metre leader of 80 lb Jinkai or similar.

Besides the advantage on the bottom of having a harder wearing line around the rocks, once the fish is boatside, you have a few turns of 80 lb on the reel and the chances of a breakoff due to tight line touching hull/motor etc are hugely reduced.
A snap swivel at the end of the mono lets me attach any change of rig easily  and quickly
(paternoster/lure/baitcaster).
On my 30 lb gear, I still use 80 lb leader.

Dont know what the braid to leader knot is called, but its simply the braid wrapped around the mono 30 to 40 times and an overhand knot with 2 turns thru the loop using the twisted parts.( you have to pull the 4 metre leader thru)...winds thru' the runners no worries and has never let me down.

I've recently moved to using an aussie plait in the 50lb braid and attaching that to an 80lb wind on leader (sufix & richter tried so far with good effect). At the bottom of this I put in a Hawaiian snap or snap swivel, I connect this to the top 3-way crane on my rig.

Make sure you attach the sinker with a lighter line than your mainline or patanoster line.  Its usualy the sinker that gets snaged with paternoster rigs, so if you loose anything its only the sinker and you dont have to re-tie a whole new rig.

I know guys who use bubber bands on lighter rigs, but i prefer a snall loop of lighter mono.

I was using wind on leaders, but they are a pain re rigging on a boat, as you lose a bit of line thru tangles, sharks and snags etc

Easier to use the same weight line for your Paternoster, I use 120lb with two dropper loops with swivels attached
then 100lb trace off that 250 long.
Easy to change trace when hooks get blunt, worn etc, just cut off and re tie ready made ones
At the sinker I just nick the line to make a weak spot.
The braid to mono is as you are using, bimini twist knot to a strong clip.
keep the number of knots to a min and keep the whole rig very simple

Thanks all, Forgot to mention that I use snapper sinkers and instead of a knot I just feed the line through the hole and crimp a ball sinker (slightly bigger than the hole) on the end of the line, that way if the sinker snags all I lose is the 2 sinkers, don't have to rety the rig.

Hi Dave, That is a clever idea with the sinkers I think I might give it a try.

In regard to leaders, I use 50lb braid and tie an 80lb leader on using a double uni, a lot of blokes tie biminis etc, however I have never had a uni knot let go (touch wood). The leader is then ties to a swivel with a hawaian snap, the heavy rig is then attached to the snap. This gives me around 5-6m of heavy line which makes handling fish easier at the boat.

Most bottom fish are knackered by the time you get them to the boat so a wind on leader is a bit over the top.
Where they come in handy is when your trolling with braid as I often do and a big tuna comes along.
The longer leader gives a bit of much neaded stretch and it's handy to have on the reel when the fish is boatside.

Thanks for your input, It appears the 80lb is the way to go.

The only reason, for me anyway, for the leader for bottom bouncng is a bit of abrasion resistance on the business end. Also to assist in bringing the fish over the side of the boat.
