They are going to do it to help their fishery

*Recommendations RRFF Mooloolaba meeting*
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a brief outline of *proposals* from the RRFF snapper review
meeting which concluded at 5pm today.

I will have the entire proposals/recommendations in detail emailed to me
from Fisheries early next week. These recommendations will be submitted
to senior Fisheries management then to the Minister and hopefully on up
through the Government approval process without too many drastic
changes. Introduction may be many months away as there is still a lot of
admin issues to iron out.

  * Commercial and Charter operators have agreed to accept a Total
Allowable Catch (TAC) ... 108 tonnes for Commercial and 32 tonnes
    for Charter.

  * Recreation anglers to be allocated a Total Allowable Catch (TAC)
of 260 tonnes per calender year.

  * To more accurately record the recreational tonnage it was
recommended that the owner/skipper of a recreational fishing boat
should be issued with a yearly snapper fishing permit by Fisheries
at a nominal cost (say $20 per year).
  * The snapper permit will be supplied with a venting tool (needle)
and a CD/DVD to fully explain all aspects of releasing undersized
snapper, enforcement and reasons for the need to rebuild the
    snapper stocks.

  * A logbook/catch card will also be supplied to enable the recording
of all snapper caught on the boat (i.e date, number of anglers,
number of snapper kept, length of kept snapper and general area
    where caught).

  * Logbook must be filled out before landing at boatramp or pontoon
and number of snapper on board must agree with logbook. Details to
be forwarded to Fisheries by phone, email, web link within 7 days.

  * A 6 week snapper only season closure will be introduced commencing
on February 1 each year for *Commercial, Charter and Recreational
anglers. * This period will co-inside with recruitment (movement)
of juvenile snapper to offshore reefs.

  * A total of the recorded tonnage will be issued about end of June
each year to ascertain if we are on or over target. If we are over
then we will be given the choice of further closures or reduction
in bag limit to meet the tonnage prior to the end of the calendar
    year.

There was a lot of discussion on all matters. Fisheries staff and all
stakeholders present were pleased with the outcomes and knowing all the
facts I think that all users of the snapper fishery in SEQ will accept
the proposals instead of a 3 month closure in the winter months as
originally proposed.

Thanks splash for the link. definately keep a eye out on that one

you know i actually thought we would be the first in Australia to have something like this. only if we had a minister that grabbed it by the short and curly's. Maybe  Mr Moore may take it on now that Queenslander's are looking at it.?  only way forward without doubt, real up to date data/figures that can be used for  a sustainable fishery

Funny hey, dvd on venting, why not give them a release weight with the RFW release weight DVD.

Hey Splash what ya reckon Gazza from QLD would be saying now. Gee would love to get stuck into him. what was he saying, best managed fishery in the world, its that good we can keep the little ones

Firstly being Western Anglers newest member, welcome to Western Angler Wally.

I look forward to your constructive contributions.

What depth are they catching the Pink Snapper in? If its shallow water could venting have unneccessary adverse effects?
If the fish are swimming away fine is that good enough?

It looks like a constructive submission.

thanks for the welcome neil , apparently Jill's st John's research didnt go down that well in Queensland and they are repeating the study up there using the release weight.

interesting thou, how our pinks dont seem to suffer like they do on the eastern side, including South Australia

No expert Spratty but reckon it may have something to do with our pinks travel off shore into really deep water, where is over there they are in the same sort of depth, but that theory gets thrown out in places like Shark Bay where they also dont suffer that bad from barotrauma

who knows. for a budding scientist there is a a Phd in waiting

Maybe a evolution thing, our pinks in WA maybe more advanced and learnt overtime to adjust a bit better ?

Could be possible I suppose ?

Seems like a fair enough submission on the surface.

My only question would be why would you supply a venting needle when its obvious to any Joe that the release weight is a far better option??

Surely this sort of lateral thinking is not beyond our fisheries managers in WA?
The solutions are seemingly there if you are prepared to look hard enough, especially when pros and recs work together.
I particularly like the logbook idea, I see this as a big step forward and something we need in WA.
Personally, I am also warming to a tag system that places boat limits on key species for individual boats over every 12 month period, but happy to hear debate on this.
The reason I like this is that the occasional angler, who does little damage to stocks, is not affected at all and this applies to the majority of boat fishos I reckon.
However, deadly SERIOUS fishos (a small percentage IMO) who are out there all the time working spots hard will be, and while they might not want to hear it, they are the people that need to be restrained for the good of fish stocks.
So you get a result that doesn't affect most people, and only affects those having the most impact.

Very well put Scott.

I see in Satdy's west they want people to sit on the  recreational fisheries advisory commitee, have you any desire to do it.

page 126 if anyone else is interested.

AS luck would have it, I spoke to Fisheries last week about RFAC, but was under the impression the media spot was taken.
However, in light of the ad I have fired off an email to the woman in charge...I do have some interest.
