Mattyoga and i hit it for a look last night. Was a storm due in the early morning but it was a way off, apparently..

Headed out about 4km ish to the mark, and dropped some big baits out on the edge of some reef structure, one on the bottom, one under a float. An abundance of Scad, Pike, squid and other bait fish kept livies on my lines in anticipation of something huge!

After a while the wind swung to the west and started to pick up, the already lumpy water was starting to rough uop, and Matt and i started looking at eachother sideways.. Matt luckily has internet on his phone, so a quick check of the weather sited showed the wind at Rotto was picking up, and blind freddie could have told me that where we were. So we made the call to head in about 8.30pm, which was looking like a wise move.

The chop and swell at this stage had fairly picked up, and my anchor got stuck, so i yanked the cable tie free, only for it to lock up again, so side on in a decent swell, howling wind, i made a quick call to cut it off, and lost my first anchor, but saftey first..

The trip in itself was very interesting, running side on to the wind and swell made it fairly wet and slow going, i was yahoo'ing all the way!! The pitch black night also made it difficult, as you couldnt see the waves till they hit.

So at the end of the day, great experience night. Didn't get the big fish we were targeting, but got home safe, and had fun. Big thanx to Matty for being an ever vigilant fishing buddy.

Matt on the Malibu X-13 at speed, certainly a pretty boat. Looks calm enough here. No prizes for guessing the launch spot.

Matty on the trip in, between swells you couldnt see his boat at all! Was wet and wild, just the way i like it! Theres something about rough weather in a kayak, makes you feel at one with the sea, you really need to move with the ocean, magic stuff.

A big squid Matty caught, it was changing colours right in front of us, amazing creatures.

Brett

I ducked out of work yesterday at lunch time as the conditions were too good to resist.
Flat calm weather, went out 10 Nautical Miles out of Mindarie and was on to them immediately.
Landed 3 KG's a Black @rse and an undersize Dhue fish.
The wind started to pick up at about 5 pm so I thought it was time to head in
You would not want to be out now

Big seas,,pitch black, 4 kms out to sea  Sounds like a pleasant evenings paddle

Much better than watching the idiot box.

Sounds exciting fellas,

This may sound like a dumb question.

Hey those squid you guys catch...are they something you can just pick up and not get stung or anything from them or do they have any dangers? Just curious I see alot of stories on here from guys catching them all over the place..

Im still a bit finiky about "what" and "what NOT to touch" from these dark blue waters..

Squid will shoot you with their ink and water on first capture if they can.  Very messy and a bit of luck involved in not getting hit.  Let them back into the water after they have shot out and they will recharge an shoot again.  The last one I caught shot its load over 4 metres, fortunately away from me so when they are dangaling on your line fresh out of the water and the line spins putting the tentecle end towards you watch out even if they are a rod leangth away!  They also have a beak in the centre of the tentecles where the tentecles leave the body.  Put your hand near there and expect to loose a v shaped piece of skin that hurts like hell.  Apart from that they are hamless just grab them arround the mantle and you are safe ...oh and always point the tentacle end away from you just in case they have a reserve shot!

Thanks for that,
I watched that bloke on iFish this morning they were catching a few squid, I saw them shoot out..holy %$# didnt realize they could do that..

Thanks for the info anyway Herb, They just looked too much like some sort of a poisinous Jelly fish to me, but yeah I feel alot safer now that I have some info on them..I will handle them with care still.

They make good bait too for the kingfish in south Australia...

Im learning the Aussie way of fishing quite quick fellas so watch out..
