Headed across early this morning , light winds, calm as.

The system has cleaned up nice over the last fortnight , there's still a bit of tea colour about it .

Sand bars are clean and vision is good again .

Straight into a few big chunky herring in the 350 range, around the Boundry Is / Quays area , tide running out .

Picked up a 400 salmon and was frustrated playing cat and mouse with the uncooperative school than were just not in feed mode , jeez they wise up quick after a couple of missed strikes.

Had bait schools of something I couldn't pick jumping in the Z bend area but couldn't temp a strike from what ever was up em , long range casts with 10g halco's.

I pretty much missed the sweet feeding times and it was quite , but I saw plenty of fish checking out my lures , that's what keeps you at it , the flash of silver, or the black torpedo shape shadow of the salmon over the sandbar.

It's all looking good again , now I just have to get back in tune with how its working and enjoy the summer.

Cheers.

I'm sure it won't take you long Steve.

I was amazed to see how quickly the local beach cleaned up too, from a brown stinking mess 10 days ago, to pristine today.

Just a quick reccy this morning .

Incoming tide , pretty strong N/E breeze coming straight down the nav channel.
Only fished the sandbars around Boundry down to the Quays .
The whole western edge was firing but made difficult by the strong winds.
The weed was patchy so trolling to find pockets of fish was the go , once found you could generally pull up and pull a few more until you got blown to shallow .

Plenty of good follows that had me flat out changing lures to improve my chances , home tied feathered single hooks with barbell eye's won hands down , little maribu's do the job though and a 5g slice used for trolling and long range casting earnt it's keep as well.

Looking good

Good stuff Steve.  The Estuary system seems to be a real big nursery for those juvenile salmon.  No tailor chased up?

I'm sure they were around but I was on another mission really and only spent an hour playing around.

They seem to hang around the same area as the salmon t's.

Cheers.

Think I saw you off in the distance heading towards the Quays this morning Steve- I took the boat over to the Cut to blow the cobwebs out.

Sounder showed a heap of fish in the cut and I did a quick troll with a Scorp52 through Z-Bend for a couple of small Tailor, but no Salmon Trout! Perhaps they are hanging over the sand banks in water too shallow for my rig (6mtr plate ali)?

Might have to get the dinghy out!

Cheers
Brendan

May help Brendan , not as important around the Quays area as I just fish the edges but you do need to get shallow around the Z bends.

Had a look around this morning and things were pretty quite , not a look in at my usual spots .

My excuse is a smallish high tide at 2.30am and a lack of water in a emptying out system , very little water over the sand bars .

There were good numbers of 300mm choppers mixed with similar size salmon around the new bridge , haven't been down there for ages and with the benefit of hindsight I should have hung around longer, the rest of the estuary was shut down, even the ever reliable entrance to the Cut was dead.

Managed a 350ish salmon out the western end of the Cut with half a dozen followers that just would not play the game after releasing the first one.

Trolled the reef area to the north of the Cut for a few more herring but it was even quite out there.

So my favourite moon stage let me down badly , will be reassessed pending more study on it's influence at this time of year.

Biggest bitch of for the day is with the guys fishing from the walkway under the new bridge............... very dangerous for boaters with kids sitting up the front .............Ive seen it happen , ganged hooks in the face.

Pox on them and they were keeping the small salmon I saw them catch , so double pox on them.

Yeah was a good day out.. Thanks again Steve.

Learned a fair few things, didnt realize there were that many fish out there.

It was just great being out there, I was pleased for the whole day as soon as I landed my first tailor on a 10g twist anyway, Really didnt realise how much go those little fellas have, gave my little sienna 1000 a good run for its money.

Few small herring too which was good. Going to tackle shop today to give it some money in exchange for some tailor and salmon lures. Got me hooked for life now!!

Anyways couldnt ask for anymore, great day out with a top bloke..Cheers Steve.

Juzz

Nice drop of in wind strength recently has made getting out much more on the pleasant side the last few days.

The system is pretty much firing at the moment with schools of white bait just about everywhere your care to pull up.

Heaps of fairy terns working the shallows is always a pretty good sign things are active.

Herring and Skippy were firing in the Boundary Is area with tailor mixed in along the edges .

No probs pulling fish at any stage of the day , but at the changes of light would be a better option.

Bigger tailor over near the Cut sand bars and some very cagey salmon around the mouth , very hard to stop trying for them when they are up you every couple of casts but not hooking up ......... very visual.

Funny thing is all this goes on right on the edges of major boat traffic , we must have had 100+ boats pass us today , all the while pulling fish.

Masses of crabbers all over the system .

Very pleasant morning fishing the last couple of days.

Cheers.
