G'Day

Interested in peoples opinons on radars. Who has got them on their boats and what brands people have.
Looking at in the future possibly getting one as it could be a usefull tool for night fishing.
What are the pros and cons of radars and do they pick up small boats.

Cheers
Frank

Hi.

Personally. I reckon every boat over about 20ft should. Compulsorally have one fitted.

Daytime.  harbour leads, Other boats. Rain Squalls. Flocks of birds. Reefs etc.

Night time.
Harbour/channel leads. Reefs. other boats.  Rain etc...
Won't even go into the help it gives you with your navigation...Specially if tied into a plotter..
Set alarms . Tells you when other boats coming into/Going out of proximity. See boat trails. Can see  bearing of all boats moving on screen.
Range. a bit restricted on low fishing boats.  Compared to yacht mast. But. Still gives you 3 or  so mile range.  More, with extra height...

I've used them for over  45yrs. Commercial. and Sailing.
Best thing since sliced bread. Only one in  smaller 16nm range.  Furuno....

Go for it.
at $2 1/2k you'll never regret it...Can't even get a good  SOunder for that nowadays.

Most 2kw radars these days will cost around 2.5k and will cover up to 24nm range.
I think in the near future you will see new type products that will sell for less and use less power than a mobile phone yet cover adequate area.
Cost will be around 2k which is less than a 5 inch GPS was 3 years ago.
Lets face it with boat sales slowing because of the financial crisis the big boys will still require toys. radar and auto pilots are looking big on the horizon...........
