Chasing thoughts on a overhead reel.
Want to be able to cast 30to50lb braid, ratchet also required for a bit of live baiting.
Price around the $400

At the lower end of your budget, but Daiwa Saltist ticks all the boxes!

Or a Torium 16. Do the same job. Just depends if you prefer Shimano or Daiwa.

And the Torque 200 will blow both out of the water, you get high speed, cranking power and an awesome drag range by far and away my favourite reel.

I use my Saltist 30TH bottom bouncing with 50lb but its simply too damn big for barra or 30lb really. If you're happy to stick to 30lb, perhaps consider the smaller profile 20 or 30H? You will notice that its 150g lighter than the other 30 sizes, and thats because its a smaller diameter reel.

model ratio weight 20lb ono 30lb mono pe4 pe5
30H 6.1 510g 270 180 540 400
30TH 6.4 660g 300 200 600
30T 4.9 650g 300 200

Some of the line capacity values have been extrapolated but you get the idea =)

Trev,

I'd be looking at a daiwa Millionaire bay area 300bb (@ $450) if you want to treat yourself..
or a Calcutta 400b for around $300
both these can handle excess abuse with 30lb
also the daiwa Luna 300 or the PennInter 975

these are more a casting reel than a saltist or a torque - so its personal preference i 'spose.

any way - havn't you got too many cows to milk, or tractors to fix to be going fishing ?

G'day Trev
hope your enjoying yourself over in the east.

I was filling in some time in a tackle store , as you do, yesterday and was looking at the new Accurates. probably fit the bill of what you are seeking but around $650.

Looked like a nice piece of machinery

I've got a penn trq100 which is a seriously brilliant casting reel, with or without the magnetic cast control. After getting rolled in sand and salt water the other night I stripped it down for a clean and lube and was reminded again what a bulletproof piece of engineering it is. Super heavy stainless gears, large infinite-anti reverse bearing plus a massive conventional anti-reverse dog. Big bearings littered everywhere .
I reckon you'd fit 400m plus of 30lb braid on it too. Highly recommended. Bit more than $400 though, but well worth it.
Failing that, I've got a shimano trindad 20, not as tough as the penn, but still a wonderful reel, and bigger.
