I seem to have sorted the problem with the line getting down the side of the roller.

I purchased some 4mm x 8mm x 3mm stainless shielded bearings and machined up a stainless steel line roller to suit and polished it.

I made two as my fishing mate next door was having the same problems and
I had made shims up to sort them out but it just keeps recurring

I made it so the bearing is a press fit (tight on the roller) and the roller is a very close fit to either end without the little plastic sleeve and shims that they had which wear out and allow the sideways movement.

Being a shielded bearing with a close fit with a bit of grease to both sides it should work well and has so far ? time will tell I suppose.

I have tried to take photos but they don't look to good

I had the same problem with my 6500b... kept on shredding the line up and getting snagged there.

I talked to my reel service guys and they have this happen alot. Im not sure if this will work for you... but they fixed mine quite quickly by turning the line roller around and adding an extra packing washes in to keep it tight. The roller turned perfectly after that, but has not seen much action since.

I would definatly take it in to get serviced by a pro, because its a comon problem and they might be able to let Shimano know... its just poor quality! The 4500 has a much simpler roller and it works great.

G'day George'

It wont happen any more because the roller is nearly twice as wide as the origonal one and instead of having a plastic sleeve between the roller and the bearing and spacer plastic sleeves to keep it centered it is bored to the bearing size to a point that centers the roller then it was pressed in with loctite.

It cannot move from its position except with a large amount of force.

I rebuilt my roller with new shims and tried it reversed but it eventually did it again as did my mates.

I must admit the reel has been under a lot of strain at times as I run 50lb braid and it has been used to the max many times as some previous posts show.

I'm not knocking the reel or Shimano as they have been great in the past when I melted
part of the drag on a big run last year,  but a factory fix would be good because it is a bit hard to spin up a little part like that in a 2.5 ton lathe

cheers

Ashley
