I am fortunate to snag a trip to xmas island this weekend and having trouble sorting out gear for the trip. I know there are persons here who have been there so am after suggestions on lure styles to take and line strength (reels and rods sorted, kind of).

I have 50lb braid on my popper outfit and hoping this will suffice?

Have plenty of large minnow llures, jigs and skirts but would like to cull the amount I take.

Do you have a boat lined up for when you're there Rob?

My family is there now.  Crabs are running everywhere and the whale sharks are in close to feed on the eggs was the report from last night.

Might influence the gear selection?

Yeh Hal, we have chartered Rocky for Sat-Sun and a half day Mon. The weather is looking good for sat & sun so hopefully we'll do alright.

50lb should be o.k but I'd go 80. Forget the skirts or pushers, the stupid birds nail them. Maybe a couple of jigs but keep them fairly small. Bring cuberas, cuberas and more cuberas. 100's are the go (on 50lb). Big stickbaits are also good. Rocky has most of the gear you will need for trolling (minnows) and more available at the Shorefire shop, so you don't need to take too much. I hear there has been a few mega wally's around lately, good luck.

I'd take four jigs per angler 100g - 150g, three Cubera 100s, a Skipjack 90 and a pair of Wahoo 80s or Wahoo 100s depending on rod stiffness. No skirts, and either troll Wahoos or a minnow or two from Rocky. That's about two kilos of tackle, another few for extraneous gear, the whole lot will come in under ten kilos.

Don't sweat that it doesn't look like much gear, you might not lose anything at all. Worst case scenario just buy a bit more from Rocky.

Thanks Paul & Hal. We just got back last night and had a ball. It was pretty quiet according to what I have heard and read about the place but we still did alright. We got a 45kg+ big eye tuna, about 5 little 3-5kg yellow fin, 1 x red bass, 5 x wahoo (best was a bit over 20kg), 1 x dog tooth, 2 x rusty job fish, a small GT and 3 stupidbirds. We did witness a guy catch an estimated 90kg+ dog tooth off ageria which he picked up on the troll and unfortunately it blew up and despite some major effort could not be revived. I hope to get back next year and see if I can time it a bit better. Oh, and I will take a lot less lures next time.
