I organised a test ride in a Velocity 5.8 Centrecab today. The boat came with an Etec 150hp motor. Conditions off Mandurah to put it mildly were rough. However the boat handled the conditions very well. We fell off more than a few waves but the landings were quite gentle considering the conditions. It was also stable both while motoring along and at rest.

The boat with a 150hp Etec went like the clappers when the the throttle was opened wide. It was  capable of pushing the boat much faster than this skipper was happy to push it to in those conditions. The Etec motor is also very quiet (at full bore it is quieter than my 70hp yamaha 2 stroke on my 5.0m Centre console is just above idle).

This boat has made it the second round of "Ray's Boating selection". Currently I have three other boats that I have yet to sample on the briny yet.

Workmate up here bought a Velocity 550 12 months or so ago and is not happy at all with it. Had a whole range of problems from fuel tank splitting to nav lights being being installed on the wrong sides. Dealers was no help so the matter is before the the courts at the moment. More than happy to pass on his details if you want a chat to him.

Hi All,

Jon I have to jump in here in fairness to Pete at Velosity. The story as i understand it, is that Velosity was originally building bare hull's and supplying them to yards to be fitted out. This did stop this some time ago due to the fact that boats where being poorly fitted out by yards, then sold with the Velosity name.

Dad just had a 580 walkaround built, and the main reason that he went with Velosity was the quality of the build and the fit out.

Ray, you can rest assured that when buying a boat direct from Pete, you cant go wrong! Our experience with Velosity was nothing buy positive, with Pete going the extra mile to have Dad's boat ready for a comp.

Ray if you do want to have a look at Dad's 580 at any stage, PM me, it lives in the northern suburbs.

Brad

Edit: I feel i should add that i have no links to Velosity other than the fact that Dad had a boat built by them.

Ray have you looked at the new Chivers range?

They have recently moved away from the Jackman hull design and come up with a much better profile
offering a 20 degree dead rise and great stability at rest incorporating a flooded chamber at the keel line.

Yep, Accept that totally. Was speaking to the bloke today acctually. He said the exact same thing. Was the dealers that did the set up that made a mess of it. It was the fuel fittings that were partially stripped and fuel hoses cut too short that caused his bilge to fill with fuel. Not nice being 60km off Hedland and watching him pump fuel out with his bilge pump.

Even had wiring problem with the trailer not to mention the nav light being fitted **** about.

He likes the boat but had nothing but problem with the dealer.

thanks Jon, just wanted to make sure Velosity gets a fair go. Pete is a top bloke and would never kick out a sub-standard boat.

Hope your mate gets everything sorted!

G day guys
quality of workmanship and service in the yards in this state seems to be the unltimate weak link
We had a bad experience ourselves last year won't mention any dealer by name spent 100k on the new boat. Everything that the dealer fitted was sub standard, batteries loose, batteries too small, wiring laying loose in wet areas, cole heerse switch incorrectly wired. The list went on and on, before the sale they were only too willing to answer emails after the sale silence.
Only days after the collection the boat manufacturer had removed them from their website as a retailer.
Was given a survey form from the motor manufacturer where I made my point and attatched coppies of my emails, manufacturer wrote back with no details to reply too stating they were suprised that one of their platinum dealers would operate in this manner and I could expect a reply soon as he was comming to WA and would bring it up with them, 12 months later still no reply.
Brilliant boat
Brilliant motor
Spoilt by bad workmanship in a dealer yard. Buying a new boat should be a great exprience but now its more like work
Hoping you have a better experience Ray don't envey you
Steve

Jon, I for 1 am glad that this has now been sorted out. As per Brads testament, I could not be more happy with my Velosity.
It was a pretty exciting time trying to find a boat that suited my requirements, especially as I was relocating to Karratha. As soon as I laid eyes on a Velosity centre cab at the Bunbury boat show last year I knew what I was going to get. Pete & Tanya went out of there way to accommodate and did everything in their power to get the boat on the water in time and the amount of time that they put into it was unbelievable , even over the Xmas period.
Once I got my hands on it I was confident that I had made the right decision. 5.8 m sports cab powered by a 150 hp E-TEC was my weapon of choice and lets just say I have clocked over 100 hrs in some pretty trying conditions and she is a ripper. Handles outstandingly and goes every where I'm willing to take it.
The follow up service has also been very pleasurable. Just the little things that make the difference are covered, things that you would not get from a boat yard. Several weeks ago the Marine stereo packed it in and with a 4 day fishing trip planned I was on my way to the shop to get a new unit so that I would have tunes onboard for the trip. 1 call to Pete and a replacement was on the plane and here the next day, in time for the trip and without a fuss or cost to me.
I also have now links to Velosity other than the boat I proudly own.

The rig sounds great- glad you're happy with it!

Cheers

Hi Brendan,

It can comfortably sit on around 35 knots and use around the 30L per hour (had her up to 45 knots on a glass off ). As you drop down in speed the fuel economy increase considerably. After doing around 110 mile round trip at various speeds and a bit of trawling I consume around 80l & minimal oil.

Hi Brendan,

I can confirm that Shane's figures are pretty accurate for the 580 walkaround as well, we get about the same speed/consumption, athough it seems we are usually traveling at about 20-22knots due to weather down in the few months that she has been on the water.

I have checked out the website for the Fibrelite boats, they look interesting.

Mainly I am interested Plate Aluminium boats because I am going to do more fishing up north where there are plenty of reefs. I think an aluminium boat will survive an encounter with a reef better than a fibreglass boat. The fibreglass boats that looked to cover what I want in a boat tended to be at least $10,000.00+ dearer than Plate boats.

Figures sound great guys! Hull and motor sound like they make for a well balanced rig!
