The Official Wangler Outboard Thread. Motors Wangler Members Use and Endorse

Rather than members new to the forum coming on here and asking the inevitable "Which motor should I buy?" question over and over again, i thought I'd start this thread. This may give us a better idea of what are the most popular (and ergo, hopefully the most trusted) motors on the market. Done correctly, hopefully it will give people a better idea of what to have a good hard look at when they enter the new outboard market

This is what I want you to post in this thread-

-What do you own now? Tell us exactly what you use on your boat. Be specific, don't just say "Mercury's are tops". Tell us the age, model (4 stroke or 2 stroke) capacity etc.

-What do you use it for? What may be good for a speed or flats boat might not be the best choice for an offshore rig after all.

-Do you like it? Are you happy with your purchase? Would you recommend one to others? Give us reasons why you do or don't like it, be it reliability, after sales service, economy, power etc.

This is what you should avoid posting in this thread-

-Feel free to comment negatively on motors that you own. But please, please, please, no negative comments about motors you don't. These comments are usually based on rather questionable opinions, that are often outdated or just misguided.

-Comments along the lines of "Oh my mate has this motor and it blew up, so they must be crap". Keep it to motors that you own and thus motors that you know the full service histories of, usage etc.

-Commercial posts blowing the trumpet of the motor you may sell if you operate a boat yard, for obvious reasons. But those in this position, even if you sell it, feel free to comment on your own personal motor. If you're confident enough to place your faith in a motor to keep you safe offshore, I think your comment is worthwhile.

Finally, i have added a poll to this thread. I'll keep the poll to the category of motor that comes up the most on here, the 90hp plus, 4 stroke/High Tech 2 stroke bracket. Post what you own (not what you'd like, what you're buying sometime in the future etc). You can vote multiple times if you have several different types of donk.

It would be good if we could keep this relevant to new motors only, so it is as useful as possible to new motor buyers. So if you own an old donk by all means tell us about it, but don't worry about posting in the poll.

Thanks, and hopefully we can make this thread a great resource.

I have a Yamaha 115hp four stroke 2007 modal which is on the back of a custom built Southern Star 525SF. The engine at this stage has got 160hrs on it and travelling well(have had same engine on other boats and have done over 1000hrs with them). No problems to date mechanically. The engine has a 17 pitch prop on it which gets me to 6100rpm at full noise but cruising is 4000-4500rpm which runs at approx 24ltrs/ hour of the fuel management guage that is now standard with this motor. At this rev range I am sitting on approx 20-22knots.

I have messed around with the engine height a fair bit to get it travelling the best and to get the best trim range out of it now all working well.

I like trolling and the boat is only used for fishing and thats why I went for a four stroke. They love this sort of work. I will often leave the engine running when im drifting short drifts as the noise is next to none and there are very little fumes.

Digital guages are very easy to read and cover everything that is relevant to a day on the water

I became one of the first owners of the new Johnson 4 strokes, when i bought a 140HP model back in December 2003. Its the identical motor to the current Suzuki 140hp 4 stroke.

I'd always had a good run with Johnson, and that had a lot to do with my choice of motor. It wasn't until after i bought it that I found out they were a rebadged Suzuki, but that's ok, i've always respected their manufacturing quality. Johnson was also the brand sold by my local dealer who i trusted, which was a bonus.

I'd previously owned a '97 130HP Johnson 2 stroke (carby) for my 6.4m fibreglass cabin cruiser. It was getting a bit long in the tooth, 6 years old and over 600 hours, and i wanted something fuel efficient, clean running, smooth and quiet, everything the old technology 2 banger was not. A quick test run with a 4 stroke Johnno with Browny at Millards was all i needed to convince me that it was the motor for me. The fact it came in far cheaper than the comparable Yamaha and Honda was also a great selling point

It's Easy starting with just a flick of the key, super quiet (almost silent at idle), no smell at all, a 65% improvement on fuel economy compared to the old 2 and very, very smooth. It's got over 500 hours on it now without so much as a hiccup. Much of the metal under the hat is stainless (bolts etc) and there isn't a spec of corrosion on the whole motor. Mine is kept in the shed admittedly, but the paint and badges still look brand new.

Great motor, i'd recommend one to anyone.

Also have a 2001, 15hp Yammie 2 stroke on the dinghy that hasn't missed a beat. Top little donk that's been given plenty of punishment, including 2 trips through the Kimberley/NT.

i've got a 4yr old 80hp yamaha (carby)4 stroke on the back of my 5.0 metre glass centre console.the boat is set up for fly and /or lure fishing with a lean rail on the front as it has low decks ,good for rough weather.

i had a 4.6 stessl tinny before that with a 50 suzuki before that and loved that too,but i find the 80 is a lot quieter than the suzi even though it is a bigger hp motor.

I have a 115hp 4 stroke EFI Yamaha on the back of a 5.9 plate ally Barrington. Motor is approx 2001 vintage but has only done 240 hours. Used for offshore fishing and quiet river trips with family.

It is brilliant. Starts first turn of motor and idles so quiet you have to check if it is running. I haven't really run any detailed consumption figures. I just fill up the fuel tank and use what I need to.

I have had 2 small issues.

First was the starter motor solenoid took about 2 seconds to kick in when I turned the key. I removed the starter and applied some lubricant. This was about 2 years ago and I have had no issue ever since.
Second was the trim/tilt sender unit on the motor packed it in and while the trim still worked it would not register on the trim gauge. A new sender unit cost $210.

I would highly recommend the Yamaha EFI 4 strokes.

I have also owned a 25hp Yamaha 2 stroke on a dinghy. The motor was bought new and I sold the entire boat/motor/trailer at about 40 hours. Once again the motor was superb.

30HP Yamaha CV on a 4.2 Quintrex Dory.
Great motor - starts first time every time and pushes the boat along with 2 or 3 blokes very well. Overall I've loved it -reliable, cheap to run, can get it serviced here in Karratha by a Yammy dealer etc. The only thing I do a bit differently is run it a bit richer than the 100:1 recomended in the manual - I just dont trust a 2 stroke running that lean. I run it at about 70:1 instead.
Only 2 possible downsides (sort of)
- the noise - for a 2stroke it's relatively quiet but there is still the odd day when I do a bit of trolling that a quieter 4stroke would be welcome. Very hard to justify the extra 2 grand outlay (approx difference in new motors at the time) though especially given that my fuel costs are bugger-all with the 30.
- I also sometimes wonder about the convenience of the outboards that have the gear shift (fwd, nuetral, rev) on the tiller handle. The yammy has the gear lever on the side which i sort of like because it seems more robust to me but I sometimes miss the convenience of the "in handle type". on the upside of this point, unlike the "in handle" type, I can give the moter a bit of a burst in nuetral B4 changing into gear if she's running a little rough on startup
Marks out of 10.......8.5

Previous boat i owned came with a 150hp Merc Optimax, had very little experience to compare it with other brands, apart from a sensor that failed it peformed extremely well and oil use was minimal with no oil fume smell that i could ever detect, 6.5mt F/G boat top speed 43knots, 280 hours and i sold the boat.

These days its a 3.7 Horizon tinny with a 08' Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke, i like the seperate gear change on the Yamaha compared to the gear change & throttle combined on a 15hp Merc that i previously owned with another tinny.

Still new to it so can't give any long term ownership opinions.

i have a 90 hp two stroke yammy 97 model with 670 hours on it ,, it gives my 5.3 m barrington plate alli plenty of grunt, and has never let me down at any time , one turn of the key and she goes, ,, cant ask better then that

i have never had any sort of problems with it , either starting or running , its pretty cheap to operate , and service

have to say its been the best outboard ive ever had for reliability ,,and ill miss it when it goes , i was considering , upgrading the boat,, but now just the motor ?? for another yammy

150hp yammy 4 stroke 2008 model (30 hours to date)- on 6m glass r/about. brillliant performance to date - so quiet that i regularly forget to turn the motor off until after I have started fishing.
Do a mixture of trolling and general offshore fishing and diving.

previous motor - 90 hp Yammy 2 stroke on 18ft Ali, 1998 model , 2 years old when I got it with the boat. Had initial problems with crap in the fuel system which was caused because the fuel breather was too low in the boat. Sold boat & motor 2007 and only money I spent was for annual service.

Prior to that a 15hp Johno 2 stroke on 3.8 dinghy . bought motor new and ran it for 5 years unitl I sold the boat. Only ever changed the spark plugs and again never missed a beat

Current motor is a Honda 2004 90hp 4 stroke with Carbies. Been very good, if a little bit heavy, economy is excellent. I've not been kind to it either, and my only expenses have been regular services and whatever I broke, usually props. Local service is very good, so no need to look any further when it comes time for a new motor.

currently run a 150 etec thats only got 15 hours on the clock.great power and economy isnt that bad.not quite as good as a 4 stroke but close.
pushing a heavy glass boat l easly get 38 knots . would need a motor over 200hp in the 4 stroke range to get the same power and speed.
reason for the etec was the yard sells them along with most other brands but was sold on the etec once a test run was had and being educated by the sales man on the motors and not going on hearsay.
time will tell but over all very happy.

Currently running 2006 twin 90 etecs on a 6.4m custom ali monohull.
107 hours.
excellent fuel economy and shot hole performance when needed.
Quiet but probably not as quiet as some 4's I've heard at idle.
At throttle they are the same.
Start first turn of the key every time.
at 3000 rpm doing 18-22 knts
WOT -have'nt got there yet .I chickened out at 48knts @ 4900 rpm -ran out of flat water.
Would highly recommend these motors.

Recently sold a 5.8m plate ali which was powered by a 135hp HPDI Evinrude. Only had 116 hrs on it when I sold it, but it was an excellent motor. Excellent acceleration, very smooth at any revs, quiet at idle (not as quiet as a 4 str) and good on fuel and very good on oil. Always started first go, despite long lay offs between use, and never smokey.
Highly recommended.

I guess 1999 Honda 50 isn’t new but it was one of the first 4 /strokes on the market and as far as I know it hasn’t changed at all. The engine was on a 4.8 meter plate centre consol the engine itself was reliable and quiet fuel efficient. But it had a nasty habit of stalling when you where coming into the jetty when you threw it into reverse. Several trips back to the dealer and it was never cured until I changed to premium petrol. The engine didn’t seem to be a good match for aluminium boats as it was hard to prop to stop ventilation. It does seem to require a cupped or four blade prop. I sold the engine with 450 hrs and still going strong even with the faults it was still a good engine.

Next was a 2004 Yamaha 60 fuel injected 4 /stroke on the same boat for a year and then shifted it onto my Southwind UB520 centre console. The only thing I can say is it was faultless for the 275 hrs I had it, it did a lot of trolling and low speed work. It was unfortunately just a little to under powered on that size boat for offshore work. Same as most good 4 /strokes it was quiet and smooth.

And last was the purchase of a new E-Tec 75 that now sits on my Southwind UB520 centre console with only 40 hrs on the clock only time will tell. It’s much quieter than a conventional two stroke but still a little louder than a 4 /stroke from mid range up to WOT. The average fuel economy is brilliant doing a little better than the 60 it replaced. I have smelt smoke a few times but only for a second when trolling which is what it does well. Super smooth and crisp power delivery it will hang on plane at much lower speeds without having to adjust the throttle setting.

On the 4.2 dory I had a 25hp 97 Merc and it was a great motor.....
On the 12fter I ran a 9.8/15hp Merc and they ran good the 9.8 was a mid 80's version always maintained same as the 15hp...
Now have a 110hp Volvo inboard and for the sea trials it appears to be the goods for the 1970's Glasscraft that's it's attached too Just needs a little love
Maybe a upgrade a little later when I can afford it
