As the title states, Why is it that you go fishing? Do you head out with the intention of catching a feed or do you go out just for the pleasure of the catch / chase?

As I don't eat much fish, I go for the fun of it

A bit of both.  I really enjoy the day out, the anticipation of the chase and perhaps the catch.  It doesn't matter to me if I am fishing from a large boat, dinghy, beach, rocks or in freshwater - it is relaxing most times but can be a hard slog another time.

I hope to catch fish when I go but am not devastated if I don't.  I am not a fan of spending hours at a filleting table so a couple of nice fish is more than enough.

I used to fish for bag limits but these days I am happy to just wet a line and kick back.

I love the smell of the fresh breeze and the calming sensation of the sea.  It is a bonus to catch a feed and sit down to a meal complete with a salad from the vegie patch.  One of my sons has now become very keen and we fish together whenever we can, which is fantastic, but he lives in Gero now and those opportunities are limited.  I just love the sea.

50/50 really

50 percent....
i want to target a particular species or am going on a trip then its all, choosing locations, determaning tackle, checking tides, moon phases, wind ect, catching bait or making rigs, packing the car, making lists, emails, phone calls, going over gear, re-check gear, getting excited, getting close now...adrenalin pumping!

*50 percent chance of catching fish*

second senario as follows...

hot summer day, light sea breeze just stars to blow, grab the rod and a bag of mulies, throw the deck chairs, esky,
and missus in the cruiser. head down the beach plop a mulie out crack a can and kick back....

*still 50 percent chance of fish*

i fish to feel good!

To be honest for all fisherman, I thinks its just the mystery...??

Not knowing if youre going to catch and if so how big, or what species will be coming out. Or seeing fish and saying what are those and casting into schools?, and they dont bite then you ramble throught your tackle boxs or bait bag leaving lures and bait around your feet as it piles up to find they arent eating anything..

The sheer excitement of hooking into something BIG!! then losing it not seeing the flash or anything, then persisting for hours after wards hoping you will hook up on the same thing to find dissapointment most of the time..Then the last cast....How many of them have you had?

Its just the best sport in the world with no scores or competition(most of the time) Just pure joy and relaxation not knowing whats going to happen next, and if it does what will happen..

Good times with good people....Things we will look back on and say I was there now..

If I expected a good feed I'd spend a lot of time disappointed, so I guess fishing is mainly an excuse to get out in the open.
Course there's also hope of having a really good day - usually associated with a hot bite or new pb. (sigh)

I just have to or I get grumpy and ill at ease with every thing .

I think it's a need to satisfy some long lost genetic gene that needs to hunt.

My wife refuses to turn her back on society and come live in a cave with me , this is a blessing in disguise as I dont have to go without cold beer and she doesn't care how much I fish .......... because she doesn't have to live in a cave.

Cheers.

I used  to go fishing as a stress relief when I was truck driving just to get away and relax and it didnt worry me if I caught something or not and nowadays its just to get out of the house ..

Its a few things with me, as Steve said its probably some long lost primival urge. its exciting, for me anyway. It helps me relax and put things that are important to me in perspective, a time of reflection on every day life, sort of a meditation if you will ,helps me cope with stuff ( wife just thinks im lazy fact is I was'nt cut out for the modern day living)

some of the best moments of my life are based around fishing, when I was a kid I used to miss school just to go and wet a line and spend time on the water that was unreal. Dad and his mates were my heros.

But you know, the irony is I match my know how against  fish on a day to day basis, realistically they are not very inteligent animals, and at the end of the day it makes me feel good to beat them.

Escape , excuse to spend money on things I can't afford, time with friends and family

Having lived most of my life far removed from the sea, it is a joy to be either in it swimming or surfing or beside it or on it fishing. The slap of wave on land, the ozone smell of that salty water, the wind blown spray on my face......

Its a bit more than Steve's primal need to hunt.....its my genetic need to be back into the very 'soup' from which we all crawled. It calls to me earnestly, constantly.......
