Hello Russ,
I've been using a knot Rev showed me for my wire to mono connection for surf rigs- I'm now using it for my mono to mono connection for the casting leader as well - pulls up super clean and seems super strong.

do you think it would work for braid to mono? eg. 20 pound braid to 50 pound mono

ive also heard of people putting a drop of glue or somthing similar on the knot to help it through the guides

does anyone use this method?

any info muchly appreciated

Hi Russ,

for mono to mono (or mono to flouro) i use a back to back 4 turn uni. For braid to mono i use an improved albright with a dab of super glue on the tag end of the mono to stop it catching on the guides.

For speed on the beach i will sometimes do a uni to uni for braid to mono (4 turns mono 10 turns braid) but this does'nt run out as smooth as the albright.

Mate, we need to catch up for a fish sometime soon.

i use a reverse modified albright. crossing over from fly fishing knots. pulls slim and smooth and no problems moving through guides.

I useva bimini in the braid and ten tie a knot someone called a queensland quickie to attach the leader to the double. It is easy to tie and pulls up really nicely. It is probably easy enough to explain if you wantedto try it but the improved albright is just as good.
Cheers Matt

Hello Russ,
I tried it on my bream gear and it works well - I have also been using a "braid wind on leader" for throwing heavish lures for Tailor and salmon etc - pe2 (20lb) on the reel and a wind on (3 - 4 turns on the spool)of pe6 (80lb I think) rather than running the mono thru the guides - just a longish mono drop length. I do a uni to uni on the braid and a albright on the mono to braid - You can throw heavy lures and plugs all day long and not have to constantly re tie the braid to mono connection - less finger cuts from the heavier braid also (I use tape on my finger to stop this)

Hi Russell the best one I have tried is a figure 8 knot tied in one end of the leader pulled down fairly tight.
Then tie a uni knot around the leader then pull down really tight and let it slide down to the figure 8 knot then trim off the tag ends , I find I dont loose any line strength with the tests I have done with this knot, and it is really great with braid.
Another thing is that it feeds through the guides really well.

For heavy surf casting I use a knot similar to that described by Ross.

The advantage over the albright is that the tag end of the 80lb casting leader points towards the reel and therefore catches less on the rod guides on the way out.

For extra strength tie a spider hitch or bimini in the main line before tying the uni or grinner knot.

More knots to try! what mainline are you tying 80lb for surf casting Eddie? and do you wrap the leader on the spool? -I see you point with the tag end.

Russ,

The strength of a given knot often differs across brands, types and even diameters of leader and main line combination.
A knot for one combination of leader/line maybe 90% however the same knot for a different leader and/or line may break well below.

Simple method when testing knots is to select your leader/line and tie a knot of each type, ie: ---leader---knottype1---mainline---knottype2---leader---.
Attach one end to a fixed point, eg: towbar, and wrap the other end a quite few times around a broom handle.
Hold the broom handle behind your back and slowly walk away from the fixed point, (take care and don’t face the fixed point as the line flings towards you when one of the knots pop).
Repeat at least three times to determine the stronger knot for the leader/line combination.

Chris,

I’m from Adelaide and the 80lb leader with 5-8 turns on the spool is to take the shock when power casting 4oz metals at the Murray Mouth for mulloway.
This is a spot where casting distance is critical as most of the big fish hang out behind the back break.
Mainline is 32lb/0.35mm low stretch mono on a mag converted MXL Avet and very stiff 14 foot rod from the UK.

Cheers
Eddie

Sounds like those unreachable salmon schools down here, the 14 footer is it low or high mount?
