mike, this is going to sound odd, but if you have room, what you would do is add bellevilles to soften the stack of springs. or find thinner springs.

imagine this, six belleville washers, different configurations will give you more or less spring. from stiff to soft, the order is....

))))))
((()))
(((())
(())((
((())(
))))()
))()()
()()()

see how this works? and specifically for your situation, ()()() has more spring than ()(), which has more spring than (). a four spring ()() configuration is softer than any two spring configuration. ()() is also the softest possible four spring combination. the only way to make it softer is to add two springs like this, ()()(). not what you expected, huh!

Hi again Alan.
Just back from the states what a flight 22hours in the Air 34hours traveling each way I was buggered. But did manage to pick up some new toys! I just finished servicing my new Avet LX 6.0 and found a couple of extra washers in the reel (Drag washers). The reel straight out of the box was pulling 40lb of drag with good free-spool when I took it apart I found 6 washers in this pattern "(()())". I removed two washers and reassembled it in the same pattern as the assembly drawing "()()". After testing again I got 10 lbs at strike and 20 lbs at full with again good free-spool. The reel is rated at 15lbs strike and 20 full but I actually wanted it softer as I will be trolling with 30 lb braid. This all sound about right to you the parts drawing lists the reel as only having 4 spring washers not the 6 I found.

Cheers Ed

ed, several others have noticed the same thing. the reels seem to work well in either configuration.

mike, you may find that the drag will ramp up too quickly. any small adjustment of the preset knob may cause big changes in drag.

Gday there, I was looking for info on the SX and now have found some on this site and found this forum very good. So now i have joined. Question I have for you is, I want to run 2-3 kg line on me SX for line class. As you have mentioned before adding extra washers may help soften the drag. Can i go this low for this class line. Finally where can i get these extra washers from? Do u have a site i can order these washers from.

Lee, your SX probably came with six bellevilles, may be some still in the box? If you arrange them ()()() you get relatively gradual drag progression, the best you can hope for with ultralight line. If you do need more somebody might be able to advise where you can buy bellevilles off the shelf in Australia (bearing suppliers maybe?) - or email reels@avetreels.com and they'll probably drop a couple in the post to you. If neither works, let me know and we can get some next time we're getting Avet parts.

lee, the sx is really much better suited for 10kg line, both interms of capacity and drag range. typical drag settings would run from 25-33% of line weight, so you are looking at a 0.5 to 1.0 kg drag setting. with a setting this light, you may not get even pressure of the drag pressure plate on the drag washer. slight imperfections in the fabric of the carbon fiber drag washer might become perceptible at these lower ranges. under normally high pressures, these high spots are simply crushed. also, you are looking at hundreds and hundreds of meters of 2-3 kg mono. it might be the equivalent of loading up a shimano tiagra 50wide with 15kg mono. setting up an avet sx so far below normal specs is certainly workable, but i'm curious to know why you would want to.

i had one tournament fisherman come to me requesting to set up a reel so that he could persure the 1kg line class record for a sturgeon. after much discussion, we settled on the smallest ambassaduer we could find. in the drag range that both of you are looking at, a star drag reel would offer the most reliable performance. you need a smooth drag im the range of 0.5 to 1.0kg, with no more variability than 5%. a large lever drag reel might not deliver that level of consistency.

Lee, we found 4kg to light for the same reasons alan has explained , most of the lures used were creating more drag than the reel was set at and that was trying to get 2kg of drag. From memory 6kg was the lightest we could get away with.(and only just!) Also if you have the older style preset knob it makes the transition between ratings a little more responsive as the knotched preset is hard and fast in it's settings.(it's the U.S. casting model from memory).

just finished another batch of reels. posting pictures like this, you could understand why i'm not very popular with the avet faithful. here's the front side of an avet drag washer.

here's the back side of an avet drag washer.

and here's a side view.

avet needs to grease their drag washers. any pure teflon grease will do. they are located in southern california, very near to cal's 2 speeds and cal's sells a teflon grease. they could use cal's grease, which is what accurate does. there will be no loss of drag range on the top end. actually, it is my belief that teflon grease will actually extent functional drag range. you can go to higher pressures before the drag washers lock up.

avet also needs to do something about their bearings. this reel had three bad bearings out of six.

funny, in this reel, the drag was perfect but every bearing, six out of six, was rusted.

i'm sure it's obvious all that a reel only crosses my bench because there's a problem with it. while my view is most certainly skewed, i still can't help but think that something seriously needs to be done about these avet reels. alan

hello Alan

I wonder if you check your e-mail much.

I read your AVET SX Rebuild on Forum.

I have Just order Orange AVET SX one speed reel too.

It seem like Most of AVET reel are Badly designed causing Corrosion and salt intrusion.

I wonder if one you fixed is order model or new model.

I am planing to Knobby mag convert my AVET.

If you know can you show me how its done?

I hope AVET is not the worst reel ever made.

your regard
