Cameron, that is why I like a custom build (at 6'3 not much off the shelf works).
The smith and jacker are from japan.
You are just too far away to show them to you

Bryn, that is a Seven Seas Jig rod with a early 16000 stella. Good powerfull combo that would only cost one or two body parts.
The Japanese websites have some amazing gear matched only by some amazing prices. Ones to look for are Fisherman, Seven seas, Palms, Smiths to name a few

Change of Plan? - 29 July 2004 8:04:28

Guys,

After a recent trip to Exmouth I've had a slight change of plan on the jigging rod.

I now want the rod to be used for Jigging for Sambos, Livebaiting GT's, Cod and sharks etc. and also for throwing poppers to GTs. All from the boat.

I know that there isn't one rod ideal for all of these but am looking for the best compromise.

I would like to stick with Calstar if I can as I'm really impressed with the GF900H that I built up, but will listen to suggestions for blanks from other manufacturers.

Would the GF760L be too light or too short at 6' for throwing poppers? Would the GF700H be too fast an action or too long at 7' for Jigging?

Maybe the 6' 6" GF765L or GF765M might be a good compromise? The action is described as "Tuna" on the Calstar website, and I'm assuming that this is a more parabolic action than the "Extra Fast" blanks. Would this still be okay for launching be poppers?

Which ever type of fishing I'll be doing I'll be using the rod with my Daiwa TDX600Hia loaded with 80lb XP Pro. (Later I hope to get a second spool and load it with 50lb.

All input gratefully recieved.

Many thanks

Hi Andy,
7'-7'6" is probably the most versatile for both purposes (depending on the blank itself and the guy at the end of it). I think 6 foot is too short for any real casting distance. Another option could be one of the Hastings rod blanks like a Graphite USA, or a United. A "Predator" or URS70XXH-M may have the firepower you are after.
Fast or slow, the action is what suits you best. I prefer slower rods but a heap of people would disagree. Good luck.

Wade.

Hi Andy
Ive used my GF700H for jigging several times and it hurts. For occasional outings or to cover a multitude of options (jigging, casting) it would be cool.

Cheers

Hi guys,

Andy, used to think that I'm by building 1 general purpose rod I was being real smart and I could save money. Man was I wrong...

Stick to rods that are designed for what they are suppose to and get 2 rods instead.

The 900H and 800H are great popping rods but they'll put a world of hurt on ye if you tried to use em for jigging.

Since you are going jigging, and you're going to pay a fair bit on the charter itself do youself a favor and get a made to fit jigging rod.

Besides, which fisherman would claim that he has enough rods... Never! Start your collection today Andy.

no probs Andy, just remember that for every reel their is a rod,and there is no need to get something that will do two things ,thats why we work and need to buy so much fishing gear, reels dont like being taken off other rods and used like some cheap....well you get the picture.....haha...cheers Geoff

Hi mate,

Gotta admit that when I first saw you posts I got a bit worried. I thought you were into rod building... and then u said you wanted a general purpose rod??? That's like saying a gold smith only makes rings.

Gotta justify the power wrapper u know... Say how's the rod building comming along?

Let's keep each other in the loop with our projects and we can learn from each other. I finally decided to take the plunge and I'm serious bout getting a proper rod lathe as I figured that I'll be using it way more often than any of the reels that I've been getting recently.

Imagine that, I live in Singapore and am surrounded by water up with places as deep as 50m just off the port and there isn't any good fishing to be had here! Wat a bummer!

Man if I only lived in Aus I would be in hog heaven.

Good luck on the wrapping... gotta to get back on my popping rod now.

Catch u later

Dillon

Hey Dillon,

Just turning my Calstar GF900H into a two piece and reworking the butt. It worked well when I took it to Exmouth, but I wasn't really happy with the way that I'd built the butt up. The reel seat was too low and the handle not long enough. Also at nine foot a lot of airlines won't toutch it.

Cut the rod in two (Six foot tip and three foot butt) and fitted the spiggot last weekend. This weekend I whipped the female ferrule and cut the hypalon and reel seat off of the butt.

Just got to get a new reel seat now and fit it and I'm done. I've decided to use bicycle handlebar tape on the butt instead of the hypalon. It's a lot lighter and I like the smaller diameter. It's also supposed to get more grip in the wet, but I've yet to try it out.

Should be finished next weekend, so I'll post some pics for you.

I've got a mate want's one built up the same and I still want to build up the GF760L for Sambo jigging so it looks like I'm going to be busy.

Good to hear from you

All the best
