Hi crew,
Just retired my FJ45 petrol, 12mpg, got into a diesel HZJ79 diesel thinking how much I'd save on fuel - wrong! Probably 17mpg at best.
Has anyone tried bigger exhaust, extractors etc?
Thanks guys.

My lil' BJ73 diesel gets about 7.6 k's to a litre when pushed hard (read full trottle into a headwind @ 115 kph) but will go upto 10.8 k's to the litre when I back off to 100 K's and down shift to 4 th for long climbs.

So on a bad day my range is 70 x 7.6 = 532 km

On a good day 70 x 10.8 = 756 Km !!

Throw the wind into the mix AND :

Today I used 20 litres to get to Karratha 305 km away = 15.25 Km/per litre (25 knot tail wind all the way....LOVELY!)

BUT on the return trip SUCKED LITERALLY!, I used 54 litres over the same distance = 5.6 km/per litre back into that BL**DY wind!

Yes the vehicle was loaded the same for both trips just 2 people on board.

Sounds a bit strange. My old man has a HZJ75 and gets about 24mpg on the highway.
Obviously it drops in the city, but 17 sounds real low. Is that unloaded?
I've heard good things about power increases with extractors on the 1hz, as for milage i'll watch this thread with interest.

I find my 12HT motor rather thirsty around town, about 15l/100ks. On the upside it uses just under 10 at 110ks on the open road.

Gaz, HJ79? Wot's zat? Troopie, tray back??

If it's a tray back does ya have a luverly canvas canopy that sits nice and square outside of the front-on profile of the cab so's ya can fit lotsa stuff in it? That nice wide canopy kills ome diesels fuel economy>

Advice on diesels that I've had is not to got the extractor / header path, it can kill power / torque / economy / all three.

You've gone from 12mpg (ULP?) to 17MPG, isn't that sumfin like a 42% imporvement in MPG, even if your fuel costs you 10% more, aren't ya still ahead?

HJ79, 2nd hand? All sortsa things that probably already know about can / will afect MPG.

Running on flat tyres maybe????

The 79 has had some gearing changes from the 78/75 and does not seem to be so frugal on the juice, same 1hz motor though, think the di-turbo set-up is a lot better.

Hey Gary that fj45 wouldn't happen to have had power steering and minimal rust would it?

Thanks blokes,
Tony - no power steering, only muscle power I'm afraid, and not what you'd call minimum rust either.
Ando - No to the canopy, but it soon will have. However, I'm building it the same shape (relatively) as the cab profile to minimise wind resistance.
Not tyre pressure either - I run them 42 psi plus due to, wait for it, the heavy load I constantly have in the back.
Ok, ok, I know heavy load equals thirsty but I drive smooth and never over 90. My GQ patrol gets 23mpg or better round town with mum, kids and shopping, so I'd hoped for better.
Maybe the aerodynamics of wagon versus ute is the big difference.
Looking forward to more words of wisdom....

cheers,
Gary W

With a heavy load in the back and driving around town, those figues I would say are not unusual.

They get better with a bit of age too. Our 79 has just hit 100,000 and is a lot better than new.

fj45- tank under seat or under cab?

Just working out my MPG, Gaz, somewhere over 21.5MPG around town (21.5 is the lowest I'd get 'round town).

So, we're running the same donk, I've got the Safari Turbo bolted on but that didn't change fuel figures so doesn't matter.

Keeping the canopy to the cab profile will only be good, am thinking that vacuum behind the cab might play a part, but that's probably getting down to splitting hairs.

We're running similar tyre pressures, mine're usually around 45PSI all round.

Big tyres? taking more fuel to turn 'em round? Mine aren't (265/75/16, or is it 275/65, crap, can't be bothered walking outside to look).

I did get advice that said the thing that makes the most difference to perf' and consumption on the 1HZ is the diesel pump timing, had mine reset when the turbo was put on and haven't touched it since, will only touch it again when I spend the grand on getting the pump re-kitted.

Other than that, could only guess it's the 2.5T of fencing stuff in the back????!!!!

Gary,

I have a 2000 model trayback. Naturally aspirated. Big nasty canopy on the back that gets lots of crap loaded in it whenever I go anywhere of great distance.
From new I was getting around 20L per 100km (I know!). First mod was set of extractors and 2.5in exhaust. Improved immediately to around 16L per 100km and have never had any probs with it.
I've just recently had a diesel/gas conversion done (at 160,000km) and so far so good. Only done one trip on it with slight power and economy improvements. Probably getting an extra 70km or so out of a tank.
End of August will be towing the boat to Exmouth so will be a good test.

I would suggest the extractors and exhaust.

Cheers

Buddah
