I'm looking to do a cheap upgrade for a banax si1300 and Pflueger criterion 60 spinning reel (and possibly GT5000W) .  I'v measured the dimensions of the standard felt washers fitted and have looked at the Penn HT100 drag washers available (see post in this forum).

Of the HT100 washers most suitable it looks like the inner diamter ID is a bit bigger then the original washers, i.e. original washer ID is 6.1mm whereas HT100 ID is 8.15mm.  The ODs are bigger two, though I can trim the washers down to fit.

My question is, will not having a tight fit of the washer significantly effect how the HT100 drag washer behaves? The extra gap could introduce a little eccentricity, though because the OD will be cut to size, I'm thinking the washer should not become too eccentric.

Any experience or thoughts on this would be welcome.

Cheers

Matt

ps. I know there is also the carbontex option, though was looking to use the HT100 to keep the price down as on a five stack drag getting 5 carbontex washers starts to get pricey.

Matt, I got in touch with Jack Erskine at Erskines in Qld (do a Google search) with similar needs a couple of times, sent him over dim's of what I needed and got back excatly what I wanted at very competitive prices.  Excellent performance and excellent service from Jack.

I've got to do the same for another reel and it's the only way to go for me.

You can also go through retailers like Bluewater to get Erskine products but I find it easy to deal direct with Jack, might not be any cheaper than the retailer path but at least you don't have to rely on someone else giving Jack the info' you want him to have.  You know, Chinese Whispers have a habit of not coming out the way they started.  Depends who you get to deal with, no question about that.

Checked out Jack's site - looks good though was going to cost a fair bit to do several 3 and 5 drag stack reels - eventually ordered some HT100s. - Not quite the Jack Erskine carbontex, though a very close 2nd and a dam site cheaper.

I was expecting to have to trim the HT100's down a bit, though they went straight in – all that was required was a straight swap for the felt ones with a liberal application of Cal's drag grease and heh presto – smooth smooth drag all the way to lock down AND an impressive amount of drag at lockdown.

The price – about $2 per washer, the result oodles of smooth controlled drag from none to stop right there and come here setting. Now all I have to do is get an angry head shaking snapper to test them

The larger ID does not appear to be an issue... time will tell.

Will try my Pflueger next, then the Banax GT5000...

G'day Matt, feels good to find a fix that works huh.

Those poor ol' snapper, they don't really need a heavy drag setting, they're like big flash labradors, they don't run all that far, don't often do the nasty, pretty easy to slow down really.

They're pretty overstated in terms of fighting ability, good fun, give in pretty easily.

But then, I guess the quicker they're in the boat the better they are for release, mind you, it's rare to have one go belly up, fairly sturdy fish.

Hope the drags all keep up the good work, that Cal's is great schmoo huh.
